I expect a flying car will be invented in 2042 .This is because many years have passed since BACK TO THE FUTURE was released, and in that time, the kind of future artefacts used in that film have been created. I think this invention will make our lives better. I think this invention will make our lives better because it will expand our transportation to the sky. I am very much looking forward to it.

I expect that medical science will progress than now in 2042. Because of Covid-19, more and more people worry about their health. Therefore, Scientists will study harder about the health. For example, they will be able to produce vaccine faster. When Covid-19 occurs, it took a little while to make the vaccine. It is still fast enough, but it will produce faster.   I think household robots will become more widespread. For example, the robots can talk. Today, there are such robots, but there are few people who have the robots. In the future, more and more people will have the robots because they feel lonely like living alone. Then, the robots can take care of the housework. It does messy things.   In my opinion, our lives will be better because of these developments. More diseases can be cured with treatment. On the other hand, the number of obese people will increase, because we don’t have to move. In this way, on the whole, our lives will be better. However, there ar...

As various techniques have developed in the past, I am confident that technology will continue to develop in many areas in the future. AI will develop especially in the next 20 years, in my opinion. I also believe that it will not only make people happy, but it could also be a cause of unhappiness, because somebody might lose job or status. Therefore, it will be a challenge to address such concerns to gain only benefits.

In 2042, a lot of new technology will be innovated by humans and artificial intelligence. There is one innovation that I guess. It’s a technology which can display some’s memory in their heads on the screen or on the air. This will make possible to “see” people’s memory what they saw. I think this technology is really useful and innovat ive thou gh one problem arises. There’s less opportunity for conversation. It’s because if people could “see” their memory, they don’t have to tell their story with their voice. Then, I think the ability to use language will decline by using that technology. Using language is the abi lity that only humans can do, I think if we lose that ability, we humans cease to be human.

In my eyes, the world will be better in 40 years because of the next developments in the digital revolution and in automation. I expect the next evolutions will be enable us to experience a variety of things virtually such as traveling, going shopping, and having dinner at a restaurant. I anticipate that they will offer a great quality of virtual reality. For example, people go to a virtual supermarket. They could see food as if they were in a real grocery store, therefore, they can check the size of food, the quality of food and so on virtually. Furthermore, they can smell food! I am sure that this will greatly help a lot of people all over the world. People can use their time efficiently. Also, people who live in isolated area don’t need to go shopping. That’s good, isn’t that? I am hoping that the world will be better with new technologies.

In 2042, the world would have been proceeding into a digital society more and more. Probably the cars will have been completely transitioned into fully automated. Maybe the flying car has already been invented. If that happens, traffic jams will likely decrease.      Undoubtedly, convenience stores and other retail shops will become completely mechanized, requiring only a few employees. People will be going to have fewer getting job opportunities. This may not be a problem in Japan because of its low birthrate and aging population, but it may be especially damaging to those who come to developed countries from developing countries to work.     Moreover, t here is no doubt that global warming will continue, and the frequency of extreme weather events will increase each year. I would prefer to die by life expectancy, not by accident.      The near future has a dream. To what extent has a world like Marvel's been realiz...

I expect the world will be more automated and digital revolution will be the next stage. For example, automatic cars will became more popular, more accurate and fully automated driving will  become more widespread. I also think we will see more technologies such as the implantation of micro chips in the body, which is recently gaining more attention.  If we implant chips in the body, we might don't need to use smartphone or some digital devices. Finally, I think our lives will be better in overall because those technology are quite useful so help people connect and make our life style more convenient. On the other hand, those technology are always not good because I prefer more human things.

Would you volunteer abroad? -- Tess Gommers

I think volunteering is a great way of self-development. There are so many cultures, with their own way of thinking, behavior, interacting and problem-solving. In my opinion it’s very valuable to see these differences, to learn from it and to understand that the world is so much bigger than your own county, with your own culture. I think it can give you a wider perspective of the world and a different view of your own position in the world. Besides your own benefits, it’s great to help, share and make a positive impact on others. Now, in my stage of life, I’m not able to do some volunteer work abroad. I wish I heard from it after I graduate, because of the many advantages. Maybe in the future there are possibilities for helping other people and learn about their cultures.

Would You Volunteer Abroad? -- Mashiro Yamashita

Image
I found that the most important thing to volunteer is teaching. It is a not good thing to only give money. We should teach a lot of things for people in poor countries. For example, it is the way of making something. I know about volunteering abroad and I was interested in the volunteer. However, I didn’t think it is familiar with me. After the class, I thought I would like to try someday.

Would you volunteer abroad? -- Tamon Yamamoto

I  believe that volunteering abroad has a positive impact on both those who participate and those who benefit from it. Those who participate are able to experience the cultural differences between their own country and the country of origin, and can apply the experience to their future lives. The countries that receive volunteers can gain a variety of skills and knowledge. I would like to participate in volunteer activities in the future. I would like to participate in volunteer activities in the future because I think it will broaden my sense of values and help me grow. If I go there, I would like to serve them Japanese food.

After watching the videos of two returned Peace Corps volunteers- Olena & Camen, I can see there is a very strong enthusiasm as well as determination in them. They have a clear goal in life that includes enriching not only their own life but the life of others. Their positive and purposeful living inspires other people, especially young people, to do good to society. Their story encourage me to adopt a more positive attitude in life . Living a purposeful life does not involve a significant sacrifice in life, it can start with many small deeds or act of kindness in daily life. If my life circumstances allow me to do volunteer work in the future, I would like to spend some times to do volunteer work in Africa where there are many children who live under extremely poor conditions.

Would You Volunteer Abroad? -- Yugo

Image
I partly think that volunteering abroad is a good thing, because some country can learn skills that they want to develop, while at the same time, people who can participate volunteering can have a cultural exchange with the people they are volunteering with. I think Olena and Carmen have gained these experiences. However, there is a case that volunteering is not necessary. For example, JICA in Japan tried to implement a ProSAVANA program in Mozambique with several countries, but it was strongly opposed by local farmers, which caused problems. When I saw this news, I believe that there was no point in these volunteers and felt that this was more like a kind of ethnic cleansing, because forcing people to accept volunteering is not volunteering, and if their traditional culture disappears due to this volunteering, they will lose their identity. The technology of people in countries with less economic development does not necessarily mean inferior technology. That idea contradicts the...

Would you volunteer abroad? -- Mayuko Nakamura

Through the experience of volunteering abroad, I think they could widen their view. For example, there are a lot of people who are suffering from famine , conflict, or disaster. They had known of stories of these kinds of people, but they could not recognize it . Thus, volunteering abroa d made them wide their view.   For me, I would like to join volunteering abroad including Japan. I have decided to join volunteer in New Zealand because my friends have join ed it before and made new friends so would like to make new kiwi friends and help someone as well. After coming back to Japan, I’m going to try to find some volunteering and get new perspective to enrich my life.

Would you volunteer abroad? -- Shiho Matsuura

I think volunteering abroad make our life more valuable. For example, we can do many experiences and also learn their culture and so on.  I am interested in volunteering abroad, but I do not want to do because it seems dangerous in a country with poor sanitary conditions. however, if I do volunteer in a country with good sanitary conditions, I think it will be nice experience.

Would You Volunteer Abroad? -- Owen

I think volunteers who go abroad can not only pass on their love and civilization, but also learn about the local culture, eat local food and see the local scenery. These activities can enrich their lives. If I finish my studies and have time in the future, I will certainly become a volunteer and contribute to the beautiful world. The reason is that I love this world! If possible, I want to go to Switzerland, because the pace of life there is very slow, and I want to experience it. As for volunteer work, I choose consulting because it is easy and can communicate with people.

Would you volunteer abroad? -- Usa Yamagami

The countries where the volunteers are sent are basically developing countries, and many of them are considered unsafe. But as Olena said, the world is a big place, and we have to learn about it. In that prospect, Peace Corps will be very beneficial. It is also a good way to take a fresh look at one's own hometown.  I respect the people who join the volunteer, but I would not like to volunteer abroad. It is because I really do not like bugs and insects. I think if I go to volunteer abroad, there are lots of bugs normally. I cannot tolerate it. I may scream and run away. That is why I cannot go to it. Conversely, I can go to developed countries, but probably such countries do not need to go volunteer.

Would you volunteer abroad? -- Ayano

I  have watched Olena & Carmen’ video the day before yesterday. I found the ways of their thinking were wonderful and useful to young people, like us. I think they enriched their life through their realization, motivation, and efforts. To realize the Peace Corps, both worked hard and autonomously. Carmen attempted to talk with professors. For Olena, she moved to the US. I would to be like them so I’m keen to be a volunteer. I’m wondering about doing voluntary work in Japan because there are a lot of problems we need to address. For example, ocean pollution significantly affected native fish and sea creatures. I want to collect garbage and reduce them. I believe this will contribute to helping the environment and developing myself.

Would You Volunteer Abroad?

Image
You have watched interviews with two returned Peace Corps volunteers - Olena & Carmen. How did volunteering abroad enrich their lives and how did they enrich the lives of those they were working amongst? Would you consider volunteering abroad in the future? Why or why not, and if so is there a country you would like to volunteer in and what would you like to do there?

Past Pandemics:A Refection -- Owen

About this week's theme -- epidemic. I have some opinions and suggestions. As for the three extremely dangerous epidemics of bubonic plague, cholera and Spanish influenza, I find that they have a common feature, that is, they cover a wide range of people. No matter what kind of disease, there are many countries and millions of deaths. This is what surprises me most about the epidemic. Among them, bubonic plague is the most terrible, because it is the most infectious. So I think even under the condition of such a high level of medical technology nowadays, people should always be vigilant and take protective measures against this series of epidemics. All possibilities to prevent him from breaking out before it happens. Like covid-19 today, it has inevitably occurred and even appeared in most countries. People want to eliminate it as soon as possible and completely, which requires the joint efforts and cooperation between the government and the people. Of course, the premise is that p...

Past Pandemics -- Ly Phan

I am most surprise by the Spanish flu. It is very common disease now and very few people die from a flu in modern time. I did not imagine that so many people died from the flu in the past. And I am most terrified by Bubonic plague because the victims suffered incredible pain, skin covered by a lot of swollen pus-filled lumps as death calls them . The disease played no favorites : young and old, rich and poor, male and female,… all fell victims to this horrible. But fortunately the pandemic taught us the importance of eating healthy and keeping our environment clean which ultimately helps us to save ourselves from other diseases. Although the pandemic , in particular Covid 19, brought severe consequences, we also must acknowledge that it created a few positive changes. The point is best demonstrated by way of few examples:  -         Preparedness: From the pandemic people learned to come up with a planned proactive str...

Past Pandemics: A Reflection -- Yugo Konno

One of the things that surprised me again throughout the class was that infectious diseases are not a thing of the past. We have experienced the Black Death, the Spanish flu, and cholera, and even with the development of medicine, infectious diseases itself have yet to be conquered by mankind. Through the Covid-19 pandemic, I have made an interesting discovery in the thinking of people around the world. It is the contrast between liberalism, which focuses on the rights of the individual, and which focuses on the interests of the group. In many Western countries, especially in the United States, where the emphasize on individual rights, people strongly oppose and demonstrate against the Covid-19 measure if it restricts people's rights. In Japan, however, people do not seem to strongly oppose the government's policies even when their rights are restricted. One Japanese politician said that this is due to the quality of the Japanese people. However, I believe that the historical ...

In this week, I learned about pandemic. There are some fascinating facts that I have known through the lectures. Firstly, I got surprised at the fact that Kitazato Shibasaburo who is Japanese, contributed to finding pestis. I am sure that his discovery had a good effect on people during the era. Secondary,  I didn’t know that the patients who had Influenzas in 1918-1919 were seriously suffering from them. I believed that they were just one of strong colds. I can’t imagine Influenzas cause vomiting, bleeding noses and so on. On top of that, I am surprised at the fact that there were four Influenzas pandemics in history such as Spanish cold, Asian cold, Hong Kong cold, and Soviet cold.  From the pandemics that I learnt , I can say Covid-19 or another new plague will be like Influenza. I’m regard with plaque, people are tend to look at negative sides but I can state one good effect. It is that pandemic can be eco-friendly. I heard that the seas in Hawaii become beautiful th...

Past Pandemics: A Reflection -- Shiho Matsuura

What has surprised I most about these pandemics is the influences. They spread very quickly and killed many people,   Which I think would have been most terrifying to face is the bubonic plagues because there were 3 times of the pandemics and then they wipe out many people.   I think there are any lessons we can learn from these pandemics. For example, I learned that a lack of knowledge about illness and unsanitary are harmful for people.   I think there were developments in several area as any positive changes that have resulted from the COVID 19 pandemic. For instance, I know COVID19 pandemic made camper and camping companies more popular. Thanks to this, people went out and felt nature. Also, I think there was a rising demand for food trucks. They helped people to get tasty foods easily.

Past Pandemics: A Reflection-- Mayuko Nakamura

Through this lecture about pandemics, I could learn details of pandemics. I had known only their names, but I didn’t know about what are the symptoms, how many people died, when these diseases spread and how they solve the problems so I was surprised a lot. I was in team of the bubonic plague and researched about it so I would like to tell my impression to the bubonic plague.   There are many facts that I didn’t know before. Especially, the number of deaths was impressive for me. Surprisingly, the half of European people died because of the bubonic plague. I think the bubonic plague is the most terrifying disease because this symptom is appeared to our bodies. For instance, when people have the bubonic plague, their bodies become black. It is one of the most terrible symptoms.     What we have to be scare is lack of knowledge when a new disease struck us. When the bubonic plague was spread, people was suffered because they didn’t know what to do and what was th...

Past Pandemics: A Reflection -- Mashiro Yamashita

I was surprised the most about death toll. For example, because of the plague, about half of Europe’s population was died. It was a surprising number for me.  I think the plague is most terrifying pandemic because the color of skin become black. It is so scary that they might feel very nervous at the time.  What we can learn from these pandemics is that living environment is important. These pandemics occurred because of urbanization, the bad situation of a water pump and so on. If their living environment had been good, we would have been able to prevent these pandemics.  Positive change that has resulted from the Covid-19 is about online shopping. I had an image that only young people shopped online before covid. However, today, more and more elderly people shop online because they couldn’t go supermarket. Thanks to online shopping, they can get goods which they need easily.

Past Pandemics: A Reflection -- Tamon Yamamoto

I was surprised that the skin of a person with black death turns black because I hadn't known the disease and symptoms before taking todays lesson. I think some disease which change their appearance badly is more terrible than others because these people might be discriminated by their strange appearance. I could learn that if we face pandemic, we need to distinguish between true and false information accurately. Finally, The positive impact of Covid 19 is that many people are now washing their hands, gargling and wearing masks. This has led to fewer cases of influenza and other diseases than in previous years.

Past Pandemics -- Usa Yamagami

Image
Pandemics are diseases that spread rapidly among people. The disease spreads faster than we can develop a cure, so the death toll continues to rise. I was surprised that past pandemics' death toll is much more than I thought. Moreover, since there were many wars during this period, many people moved to other countries with the virus. As a result, the number of infected people spread rapidly across countries. I was reminded of the greatness of research facilities and medicines that we take for granted today, such as microscopes and antibiotics. One thing I learned from all of these past pandemics was the importance of cleanliness and eating proper foods. And of course, be careful to keep your distance from patients. Recently, because of COVID-19, our lifestyle completely changed. I think the positive effect is people are aware of their health. People wear masks and wash their hands, so these days the number of flu is decreasing. In the future, I don't know whether COVID-19 compl...

Hi class, think about what you have learned so far this week about the bubonic plague, the cholera epidemic, and the Spanish flu epidemic. What has surprised you most about these pandemics? Which do you think would have been most terrifying to face, and why? Are there any lessons we can learn from these pandemics when it comes to ensuring we are prepared for future pandemics? Finally, the clips we watched reported that the pandemics actually paved the way for various positive social changes. Can you think of any positive changes that have resulted from the Covid 19 pandemic? Also, don't forget to illustrate your post with an image.

My Experience When I Felt Culture Shock in New Zealand -- Mayuko Nakamura

Image
My Experience When I Felt Culture Shock in New Zealand   Since I have been in New Zealand, I had experienced culture shock a lot in various occasion. One of my experiences that I was surprised at New Zealanders show their emotion by using their bodies and faces.   When I went to a local concert that a couple of bands played and their friends and families gathered and listened to, while they were listening, the y began to dance and sing . I was surprised because Japanese people never o such kinds of things. They just listen and sit calm ly. Then, at the end of their songs they applaus e. They do not say anything and leave their chairs That cause is obvious. It is because Japanese people always care about other people, and they do not want to be thought of as str ange. That is why they are not willing to show their emotion. However, I do not prefer this behavior because showing emotion is not rude when applauding something.   I was surprised and excited when pe...

Boyan Slat & The Ocean Cleanup -- Ly Phan

Actually, the idea of solving   environment issues is not new. However, Boyan Slat is probably the first person who successfully implemented   cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. He combines environmentalism and technology to solve global issues of sustainability. His innovation not only successfully tackled an environmental problem but also created economic benefits such as jobs and financial profit. I think that his primary motivation is to solve the problem and not for his own financial gains. Although he did not meet his original target of cleaning up the entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch, no one else can do what he has achieved thus far despite criticism from various parties. His project is still going very strong. His motivation and determination is very commendable.
