Past Pandemics -- Ly Phan

I am most surprise by the Spanish flu. It is very common disease now and very few people die from a flu in modern time. I did not imagine that so many people died from the flu in the past. And I am most terrified by Bubonic plague because the victims suffered incredible pain, skin covered by a lot of swollen pus-filled lumps as death calls them . The disease played no favorites : young and old, rich and poor, male and female,… all fell victims to this horrible. But fortunately the pandemic taught us the importance of eating healthy and keeping our environment clean which ultimately helps us to save ourselves from other diseases. Although the pandemic , in particular Covid 19, brought severe consequences, we also must acknowledge that it created a few positive changes. The point is best demonstrated by way of few examples:

-        Preparedness: From the pandemic people learned to come up with a planned proactive strategy for efficient prevention and control of the virus, more stringent measures to contain the pandemic

-        Flexible economy: When the global economy has hit the worst recession due to the pandemic ,no jobs means no money, and no money means no food. People altered from traditional business to online selling such as Food delivery, working from home. New industries were created and less consumption of fossil fuel.

  1. Hi Ly you portray the two sides of pandemics well. The Covid 19 pandemic as you say has challenged people to think of different ways to make a living and the learning that has occurred as a result of the pandemic is an asset to society as a whole.
I have to say, due to our strict lockdowns in New Zealand we have been sheltered from the virulent outbreaks that hit many countries. Due to our government's approach, we were sheltered from the worst of the pandemic, and even though there was a good deal of economic stress as a result of the lockdowns I am so grateful that I didn't lose friends and family to Covid 19 as many did abroad.
