My Experience When I Felt Culture Shock in New Zealand -- Mayuko Nakamura

My Experience When I Felt Culture Shock in New Zealand

Since I have been in New Zealand, I had experienced culture shock a lot in various occasion. One of my experiences that I was surprised at New Zealanders show their emotion by using their bodies and faces.

When I went to a local concert that a couple of bands played and their friends and families gathered and listened to, while they were listening, they began to dance and sing. I was surprised because Japanese people never o such kinds of things. They just listen and sit calmly. Then, at the end of their songs they applause. They do not say anything and leave their chairs That cause is obvious. It is because Japanese people always care about other people, and they do not want to be thought of as strange. That is why they are not willing to show their emotion. However, I do not prefer this behavior because showing emotion is not rude when applauding something.

I was surprised and excited when people expressed their feelings by using their bodies. If I had the courage to do that, I would like to dance and sing together. From my experience, I believe that showing emotion is not a bad behavior and it makes other people feel happy.

  1. Hi Mayuko, an interesting account of your experience, well told. There are indeed opportunities to express emotion in every culture. It is just that the opportunities vary across cultures, as does the range of emotions it is acceptable to express and their intensity. From living here in NZ you have been exposed to some of this cultural diversity around the expression of emotions.

  2. Hi, Mayuko! I didn't know about New Zealand's concert situation. But it is so exciting! I also think it is good to emphasize the audience's feelings.
