Boyan Slat & The Ocean cleanup -- Mashiro Yamashita

I thought Slat’s project should be done. In fact, the machine can collect a lot of plastic trash. According to hid TED talk, 300 million tons of plastic is producing every year, so we should collect plastic which were already thrown away into the ocean. Despite this situation, there is a criticism that, firstly, we should reduce the amount of producing plastic. It is correct, but I think we should do both of them which are reducing the amount of plastic produced and collecting plastic trash. Some critics say that the plan will have a bad effect on creatures of the sea. However, I found that the project will save them by reducing plastic trash. He used crowdfunding to raise fund, so we can know that he has a character which can influence others. People raised fund because they were probably moved by his speech or thinking.

Boyan Slat & The Ocean cleanup -- Yugo Konno

It is obvious that environmental issues are a major topic of discussion in the world these days, and marine pollution is one of the most widely known environmental problems.  Slat’s idea is revolutionary and could contribute greatly to solving this problem. I agree with his idea that “preventing” cannot solve this problem, because I believe that just reducing the amount of garbage thrown away means postponing this problem. The most surprising thing is the age at which he started the project. Despite his young age, he developed his own garbage-collecting machine to solve marine pollution, and despite much criticism, he was able to put it to practical use by improving some of its flaws. From this sequence of events, I guess his personality is brave and calm. I would also say that he is a brilliant man with excellent inductive thinking skills. However, I believe that their sophisticated technology is not enough for the success of ocean cleanup. To solve this problem, we need to ...

I think his energy is very impressive. Without action, nothing will happen, so I think his project is contributing to the cleanup of the oceans in some small way. I think that his confident attitude has a positive impact on the people involved in his project. I want to be able to act with confidence like him.

I think his ideas are nice because the idea got a point. Personally, I think focusing on gyres got a point. Otherwise, this idea seems inefficient because we should get people and ship them out every time now. Also, I think his youth and energic personality have fueled them because positive and fresh things are necessary for innovations.   I think his ideas seem a little bit ineffective so we should make it effective. if it will be in the long run, I am sure it can solve ocean pollution problems which is related with plastic rubbishes almost. In my opinion, to be effective, it seems nice that creating autopilot systems.

Through his story of coming up that idea, I was surprised and impressed. Firstly, he has been doing engineering projects and building things since he was two years old so you can know that the ocean cleanup idea might be built up when he was young. In addition, when he was only 16 years old, he decided to devote a high school essay for investigation of plastic pollution. 2 years later, he presented his idea at TED talk and his TED talk went viral. Then a lot of people invest to his project and he founded the Ocean Cleanup in 2013 finally. From his story, I guessed his personal characteristic is that he can concentrate to one thing strongly and he can complete what he works on with passionate thoughts. Because of this personality, he could build up his own organization and be supported by a lot of people. To last the Ocean Cleanup for the long time, I suppose that they need to raise the funds from all over the world because they are success has been successful at this time so we need to...

Boyan Slat & The Ocean Cleanup -- Owen

On the issue of marine pollution, my view is the same as Boyan Slat. Ocean cleaning is urgent! Why is marine pollution getting more and more serious? It is so serious that even human beings are unwilling to face their own damage to the marine environment -- oil and its products, heavy metals, plastic products and other chemical raw materials are poured into the sea -- various pathogenic bacteria are rampant, and the temperature, salinity, oxygen level of the sea are changed, even full of toxins -- a large number of marine organisms die, and the chain of marine organisms is seriously damaged -- human health and all marine related industries are adversely affected. This is a long list of results caused by long-term human misconduct. It is almost impossible to solve the problem quickly and with less money. This is also the reason why Boyan Slat's project is not promising. However, it is precisely because of the emergence of Boyan Slat and his team, with people who are really willing...

Boyan Slat & The Ocean Cleanup -- Usa Yamagami

Mr. Boyan Slat was surprised by the amount of plastic waste when he went diving, a hobby of his. He became aware of the dangers of plastic waste and, although he was still a minor, he decided to actively conduct an experiment to solve the problem. What I find amazing about him is that he was willing to try experiments even though they were not subsidized by the government. He continues to work with Ocean Cleanup today. His plastic waste collection operation can separate the trash from the fish and plankton and collect only the trash on a large scale. On top of that, he uses fuels that reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and other aspects besides trash that do not pollute the marine environment, which I thought was amazing. I believe that his ability to take action to improve the situation as soon as he realized that it was not good led to the current results, rather than adults who realized that it was not good and did not take action.

In my opinion, I believe Slat and Slat’s ideas will contribute to the great reduction of trash in the world’s oceans. Some people say that he’s idea is too unrealistic. However, at least, he has been collecting trash. Therefore, it’s getting closer to the reality.  In regard with his achievements, I argue that His ability to take action contributed to his achievements. I think Ordinary people are hesitate to do these big projects.  In a long run, I affirm that the ocean clean up project’s success will definitely be good for the environment and wild fish and animals.

Watch the clips available on Teams and write a post about Boyan Slat & the Ocean Cleanup. What do you think of Slat and his project? What is it about Slat that has contributed to his achievements to date? Which of his personal characteristics do you think have fueled them?  He has, though, experienced setbacks, with his initial idea of an autonomous plastic trash collecting system not working. How successful do you think the Ocean Cleanup will be in the long run?

Culture Shock -- Yugo Konno

Since I began my stay in New Zealand, I have experienced some culture shock, although I have not experienced any major stress. I would like to describe them below.     The first culture shock I experienced was a number of toilets. In New Zealand, we can only use toilets in large shopping malls or public toilets. However, I can use them in convenience stores in Japan. Also, bathrooms in New Zealand tend to be dirty and smelly compared to those in Japan.     The next thing that confused me was the hugs. Since I came to New Zealand, I have often received hugs as a greeting. I have already gotten used to it, but at first I was surprised every time, because nobody does hug in Japan.     A third thing is that I am often asked about my thoughts. In my native culture, it is not a good idea to ask for one's opinion in public, especially about politics or religion. However, since coming to New Zealand, I have often been asked those kinds of questions. This is ...

culture shock - Mashiro Yamashita

It is difficult to overcome culture shock, but there are a lot of ways to overcome this problem.   When I was a high school student, I studied in Cebu in Filipin for two weeks. It was a first time to live away from my family, so I was nervous. There were Japanese students, but it was a first time to meet with them.   When I went to Cebu, I realized that I didn’t like Cebu foods because the tase didn’t suit me. I couldn’t eat almost of them. Eating is important thing for me, so my anxious raised more and more. Fortunately, I could make friends and I talked about my worries with them. One of my friends said to me that you should enjoy your life except for food. I thought I should enjoy my life because there were only two weeks. As a result, I could overcome this culture shock.   Through this experience, I found that the best solution is asking someone for some advice. If there is no friend in the same place, you will be able to call your family, teachers and fr...

This time, I would like to talk about culture shock regarding buses.   First, there was the day when the buses that come only once every 30 minutes did not come. That was two days in a row. I was indeed frustrated because it was quite hard to keep waiting for the bus in the cold weather and on top of that, I would be late for class. I asked my host mother and she told me to look at the online sites. When I looked, I found that there were no more buses available at the time I wanted to use, due to the driver's illness. In Japan, a substitute driver is always provided and the bus comes without delay, so I was surprised that New Zealanders are fine with buses not showing up and not getting angry . But I couldn't help it, so I checked the website every day and took an earlier bus.   However, what irritated me most was that one day the bus left earlier than scheduled. I left my house to be at the bus stop before the scheduled time, but I couldn't catch the bus and that made m...

My Ideal School -- Tamon Yamamoto

The ideal school in my opinion is one that offers many opportunities for experiencing social visits. A field trip is a visit to a company to see and experience how they work. The advantage of a field trip is that children can visit companies they are interested in and get a clear idea of what they want to be in the future and what kind of career they want to pursue. By experiencing workplaces in all fields, from those that interest them to those that do not, they are able to learn about a world they have never known before. This is very useful for self-reflection. The more we go on field trips, the more we learn about society. So I think we should incorporate the plan at least once a week. However, in many schools, these tours are only offered once a year or once every six months, which is not much at all. I don't think you will find your dream after experiencing the one or two workplaces. However, there are many problems in achieving this ideal school. One is cooperation w...

1.About a campus  To my ideal school, there are two campuses.  A First one is an ecology campus, and a second one is a high technology campus. If you learned about how to grow plants and about insects thorough unconventional ways like outside study, you can go to the eco campus. This campus is connected to natures closely. For example, there are many kinds of plants and insects in a school museum at an eco-campus. Also, this campus is made from plants which are bamboo and plants, so this campus is kindly for an environment.  Next, when we study science and technology or learn how to use computers and machines, we can go to the high technology campus. There are many kinds of high-tech machines and computers there. 2.Abot subjects There are compulsory subjects, and we can select of subjects which we study. For example, compulsory things are morals and languages like English and Japanese and so on. On the other hand, music, art, math, and physical education are not com...

My ideal school -- Usa Yamagami

My ideal school will be developing students who are strong in computers and other programming skills. It can be said that the school will be strong in computer science. When the students enter the school, they will be given their own electronic devices, for example, laptops or tablets, and they can use them freely while they are spending time in school. In the classes, they can learn about programming and how to do fast typing. Moreover, they will have presentations and researching documents and graphs classes much more than in normal school, so they become proficient in the use of business tools such as Excel and PowerPoint. And I think the most interesting class will be using the game Minecraft. Students will be able to create various architectural structures, so they can learn creativity and programming. There will also be classes to learn digital illustration using digital illustration tools such as Ibis Paint. While s tudents will live in dorms, and there will...

My ideal school -- Ayano Yoshiike

Image
My ideal school Ayano Yoshiike   If I were an educator or a school principal, I’d like to introduce a method called “4 trees”. I have come up with this system by myself, so I’d like to explain it. “4 trees” is a method which 4 educational approaches are combined. The first approach is adopting high tech classes. The second one is adopting outside classes that teach students agriculture and environmentally-friendly activities . The third one is adopting self-organization study. In this method, students study individually. The fourth one is that teachers teach children, but they get students to solve questions. To adopt this method, children can study inside and outside of their school. Also, they can learn both high tech and traditional education. Also, they can work with their classmates, and they can even have their individual studying time. However, there is a problem. Students would be lazy whilst they are studying by themselves. To solve this problem, we can hire mentors...

My Ideal School -- Mayuko Nakamura

My Ideal School I would like to describe the details of my ideal school. Firstly, I need a place near nature that students can go outside in break times or lunch times freely. If there aren’t digital devices in this school, they cannot learn how to use or media literacy when they grow up so I would like to create classes which have both aspects nature and technology. I also need advisors and counselors.   In my school, I want students to think outside the box. They will need skills to create ideas which will be useful for our environment or our future. Therefore, I will not adopt methods of using a curriculum or teachers. Because of this, students can take classes what they want to learn or with subjects which they are interested in. If there were in school, students would behave typically and conventionally. I believe that people who can think outside the box will be needed to save our future so I will not use any a curriculum or teachers.   However, there is a ...

My ideal school -- Mashiro Yamashita

My ideal school is to combine many ways of studying. I have came up with this school because I hadn’t decided what is most important in education.   At first, we will combine study inside and outside. Sometimes, students will study inside at a desk, and sometimes they will study outside like growing vegetables or flowers. By doing this, students can learn knowledge which is important in the future. In addition, they can appreciate nature and the environment in our life.   Second, we will use both book and Internet. Today, media literacy and knowledge of using Internet are very important because more and more people use the Internet all over the world. However, some people like using books to study. For example, when I was a junior high school student, I always used the book to remember English words, because it was easy to write in the book and I could carry it easily. Therefore, students can receive benefit of both of them.   Third, students will study at a ...

An ideal school -- Yugo Konno

I think an ideal school is a place where children can decide on a curriculum themselves to raise their independence, and there are sophisticated teachers. However, there are several challenges that must be solved in order to achieve both of these goals. There are two important things to make an ideal school. A first one is independence.  It is important for children to decide to some extent what they want to do in the future. In order to achieve this, we must create an environment in which they can freely choose their own curriculum. The other one is high quality educators. Children who have independence need educators with a high level of expertise. No matter how much the students' independence increases, it will not be effective if the quality of educators is low. In addition, in-depth knowledge is necessary to develop high quality teachers. In order to realize this, it is necessary to strictly set and review the wages of educators and the criteria for becoming an educator....
