An ideal school -- Yugo Konno

I think an ideal school is a place where children can decide on a curriculum themselves to raise their independence, and there are sophisticated teachers. However, there are several challenges that must be solved in order to achieve both of these goals.

There are two important things to make an ideal school. A first one is independence.  It is important for children to decide to some extent what they want to do in the future. In order to achieve this, we must create an environment in which they can freely choose their own curriculum. The other one is high quality educators. Children who have independence need educators with a high level of expertise. No matter how much the students' independence increases, it will not be effective if the quality of educators is low. In addition, in-depth knowledge is necessary to develop high quality teachers. In order to realize this, it is necessary to strictly set and review the wages of educators and the criteria for becoming an educator.

There are two major problems in realizing the above two issues. Firstly, if students are allowed to choose their own curriculum, they will learn only what they want to learn. They might lack crucial knowledge to live. To solve this problem, we need to force students to study some subjects they need to know. Secondly, funds are also a big problem. Funds are needed to improve the quality of educators. This is difficult because it requires a change in the attitude toward education in society as a whole, because the funds are made from tax.

In conclusion, my ideal school is a place that tries to develop students' independence, and where there are quality teachers. However, there are some problems in achieving this. Promoting the education of children is an investment in the future, and therefore, educating children should be brought closer to the ideal.

  1. Interesting, Yugo, in the end I think you opt for "independence plus" or "independence within certain limits." It might be that such an approach will produce more mature & constructive individuals than those nurtured by an "independence without limits" approach.
