Boyan Slat and The Ocean Cleanup -- Mayuko Nakamura

Through his story of coming up that idea, I was surprised and impressed. Firstly, he has been doing engineering projects and building things since he was two years old so you can know that the ocean cleanup idea might be built up when he was young. In addition, when he was only 16 years old, he decided to devote a high school essay for investigation of plastic pollution. 2 years later, he presented his idea at TED talk and his TED talk went viral. Then a lot of people invest to his project and he founded the Ocean Cleanup in 2013 finally. From his story, I guessed his personal characteristic is that he can concentrate to one thing strongly and he can complete what he works on with passionate thoughts. Because of this personality, he could build up his own organization and be supported by a lot of people.

To last the Ocean Cleanup for the long time, I suppose that they need to raise the funds from all over the world because they are success has been successful at this time so we need to support their project and plastic pollution has a strong connection to our environment. We have to be involved to their project for our life and planet. To raise the funds from a lot of people it is needed to be known so they should use SNS to share his innovative idea.

  1. Hi, Mayuko. I too think that big project needs a lot of money. His personality and the challenges he envisions will certainly move people and contribute greatly to crowdfunding.

  3. I think his personality that stick to something strongly is brilliant.
Also, in order to raise the funds, it is immensely important to make everybody know the problem as a fist phase.
That's why David's classes are so meaningful:)

  4. Agreed, Mayuko, the more funds Slat can raise for his project the better. Perhaps each one of us in the class can share news of the Ocean Cleanup via our social networking site accounts. We can be part of fueling the success of the project for the good of us all.
    David :-)
