Poverty: Is It Getting Better? -- Mayuko, Usa and Kana
We believe poverty level is getting better. By poverty, we mean that poverty level in the world. We would like to introduce three graphs or charts to support this point. The first one illustrates the population living in extreme poverty in 1987 to 2013. This chart gives a comparison of extreme poverty in the past of the world. This overall impression of the poverty has fallen dramatically and improved in 2013 compared to 1987. East Asia and Pacific had the highest rate in 1987, while it had fallen to the third poverty in the world.

In 1987, the poverty in East Asia and Pacific countries had rated 60 %, but in 2013, that rate had fallen to nearly 5%. The ratio of the world poverty dropped from about 35 % in 1987 to under 11 % in 2013.The second one shows people in the world living in extreme poverty in real-time. A black person who runs away from the chart is a person who escaped poverty today. A red person who runs away from the chart is a person who fell into poverty today. According to the chart, about 680,331,240 people are living in extreme poverty now. 1.0 people per second can escape from poverty now, but the targeting escape rate is 2.5 people per second, so we didn’t being able to achieve the target. I thought more people than I expected be achieving to run away from poverty when I saw this chart for the first time, but the number that 600 million is still very large.

The third one is about the future prediction. This graph shows the prediction of the poverty level up to 2030. There is a gray line which shows a future prediction without the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of poverty level in 2030 is to reach 3 percent. However, the rates have been pushed even higher because of COVID-19. For the orange graph shows the future prediction in now situation, with COVID-19. From 2021, the poverty level started to decrease slightly. In 2021, the world poverty level was more than 9 percent, but after 2021, it has became better and predicted it will reach 7 percent in near future in 2030.

DeleteInteresting graphs shared and some thoughtful interpretation. The reduction in poverty in East Asia & the Pacific was particularly dramatic, wasn't it? I would say that incredible economic growth in China is largely responsible for this change.
ReplyDeleteYour 3rd graph clearly indicates the effect of Covid 19 on the world. It would we nice to think that the peak of the pandemic has passed and that things will get better from now.
