Terrorism: Is It Getting Better? -- Shiho, Tamon & Owen

We believe terrorism is getting worse. We’d like to introduce three graphs to support this point. The first one shows that Incidents and deaths from terrorism in the Sahel, 2007-2021.

Unfortunately, Sahel has become the new epicenter of terrorism because of the lack of enough water and food, also a weak government. From 2017 to 2021, the numbers of incidents and deaths dramatically rose. If the problems that are lack of water and food don’t be solved, terrorisms will be happens in the future.

The second one is about where the accident of terrorism was happened.

As you can see, about 40% of accident of terrorism was happened in the Middle
East like Iraq or Afghanistan, which means it tend to be happening in developing countries. Unless the disparity between developing and developed countries is eliminated, terrorist incidents will not decrease and will get worse.

The third graph shows what the terrorists are targeting. This chart shows that the main reasons for terrorism are religious and political reasons. However, as globalization progresses, people's ways of thinking are becoming more diverse. Hence, religions and politics also become more diverse. In a diverse society, it is clear that differences of opinion will occur.

For these reasons, we believe terrorism will be getting worse.

  1. I understand the idea "If the problems that are lack of water and food don’t be solved, terrorisms will be happens in the future". I think we have to think about ways to support these countries.

  4. Thank you for a really good research. Solving causes of terrorism is so challenging because of its opaque, but I think the most important thing is making a concession each other politically and religiously.

  5. I also think that terrorism is getting worse in the world. I have a question about the first graph. Why did the number of incidents and deaths dramatically decrease in 2017?

  6. Your interpretation of these graphs is really interesting. I agree with you that the Sahel is an area characterized by hunger and thirst, and no doubt such deprivation provides a fertile ground for extremism to grow.
In interpreting the 3rd graph about the ideological motivation of terrorist groups you say that globalization is making for more diverse societies which makes conflict between groups more likely. On the other hand, one might argue that diversity provides the opportunity for learning about each other, which may lead to greater understanding and harmony. David :-)
