The Three Minute Thesis Competition -- Mashiro Yamashita

Kasun Perera’s presentation was most interesting for me. He spoke about carbon risk. Climate change is the most important problem around the world, but I didn’t know about what he said. Therefore, I was impressed by his speech and I felt we should think about climate change.

I think Iki Mafi Uele was the most effective communicator, because, at first, I was interested in his picture. It was strange one and I could image a lot of things. Second, his body language was very good. He used body language a lot, and he was asking many questions to the audience. It was like talking with the audience. There is another person who was effective communicator. It was Shabana Ali, because I could understand her speech easily. She asked questions to the audience and said “The answer is ...” I don’t know whether it is the best way or not, but it is easy to understand for me.

Possibility of post graduate study which I have gained from this session is that we will become able to speak what I want to say with confidence. Everyone looked like having self-confidence. When I do my presentation, I sometimes feel shy. However, they are used to speak to the audience. On the other hand, challenge is about language. In university, there are a lot of people who come from all of the world. I felt there are some English speaker who speak English with accent. I found it is difficult to understand completely, so I strongly thought that I should study English more than I think.

It is difficult to understand their speech, but I was impressed by that. I could do a good experience.

  3. Hi, Mashiro! As you said, they had great confidence, so we could hear and relax their speech. (The content was very difficult, though...:( )

  5. I agree that they looked confident. I think the reason why they looked confident is because they had practiced hard.

  7. Well done, Mashiro, your response to the 3MT talks was thoughtful and detailed. I agree that Ali and Uele both communicated well by using an effective slide, eye contact, gestures and rhetorical questions. I think you encapsulated the strength of Uele's talk in seeing it as conversation-like. Such a talk makes the audience feel included and engaged, and it is likely to be effective.
You are also right that getting one's pronunciation right does make one's speech more understandable, so indeed this is an added challenge for the non-native speaking postgraduate student. David :-)
