An event that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood -- Kana Ito

When I was a 1st grade of high school student, I started to work at a cake shop. At this age, I had been wanting money which I could use freely. Before I started the part-time job, I always got 5000 yen from my parents every month. However, it was not enough for me. I asked my parents to give me more money, but they did not. That is why I started the job. I was worried about getting a part-time job because none of my friends started part-time jobs and it was my first time to work. In addition to this, teachers and my parents always told me a student’s main purpose is studying, so I had a concern which I could do both studing and working. At first, working was too tough for me, but I always took care to be patient. It is because I thought if time passed, I could get used to the job and new life style. There was a number of technical works which was difficult, but I just tried, worked many times there, and waited for time pass. After that, I could accept the change and new job, and then adjust my new life. When I got wages for the first time, I really felt independence. Making money by working by myself was really hard, but making money could feel I was an adult or a member of society. A few months later, my parents stopped giving me spending money. That is because I got wages. It has been almost 5 years since I started at a cake shop, but I still work there and I am proud of my job. I can learn about ways to use money and society from working. I am glad to chose this job and experiences. I would like to continue until I graduate an university.

  5. Work does indeed teach one responsibility and provide one independence, you are right there. I remember taking pride in the after school job I had as a primary school student. I used to deliver newspapers 6 afternoons a week. I had to work rain or shine, so I learnt that it isn't always easy to make a living, and that was an important lesson for me. David :-)
