A problem I have solved -- Ayano Yoshiike

My Hardship in New Zealand

Two weeks after arriving in Dunedin, I was about to go back to Japan due to my homestay problems. I went through some difficulties in my previous host family’s house. In my current one, there were a lot of misunderstandings between my host mother, the language school and me.  Luckily, there were a lot of warm people around me so I could opt to stay here until now. Unfortunately though, I am still trying to find a best way to settle in Dunedin. I feel extremely stressed with these things.

However, I have started consulting with various kinds of people such as my family, my friends in Japan and Dunedin, my Japanese university, my Japanese university support centre, my doctors, and of course, the language centre staff and teachers. Also, I have been trying to go outside as much as I can to enjoy the time here in Dunedin. My best and biggest achievement is that I have found my dream. I’d like to be a study abroad counselor or a student support staff in a department of studying abroad. This was one of my biggest aims of my study abroad program, so I am extremely happy with this. I can stand anything because these things will be useful to my future job. Even though I said that, I would still like to have a good time in Aotearoa.

Over two weeks, I’ve become a more patient, adaptable and strong person. I now embrace and solve challenges rather than fear them. I’m one hundred percent sure that I will not run away from any problems and will try to solve any difficulties both in Japanese and English.

  5. Thanks for sharing your story in Dunedin, Ayano. I agree that this experience would make you a student exchange adviser who could empathize with the students you were assisting on their study abroad trajectories. May the rest of your stay here be smooth. David :-)
